Tattoo Q&As

Here are some common questions and answers regarding my work and booking process. Feel free to contact me via email if you have any other questions.

How do I book in with you?

You can book in with me using the "BOOK" page on this website. On my Instagram, the booking link is in my bio. I also have a Highlight on my Instagram that explains how to book using this website.

How can I prepare for my tattoo?

Pre-appointment prep

-You should get an email notification 24 hours before your appointment to remind you of the time.

-2 weeks before the appointment, start exfoliating once a day. Follow this by moisturising the area, also once a day after you’ve exfoliated. This will get rid of any dead skin which will make the tattoo process and healing easier for you.

-Going to your appointment please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting ink on. Also wear clothes that allows for easy access to the tattoo placement, to avoid having to take off any clothing.

-Eat a big breakfast and get a good nights rest. Please no excessive drugs or alcohol the night before. Include something surgery (fruit juice) into this breakfast.

-Bring lots of food, snacks and drinks with you. This will help keep your sugars up throughout the day.

-Bring entertainment with you. Sometimes I can’t talk much due to me focusing, so its nice if you bring something with you to distract you while getting the tattoo.

During the tattoo appointment

-start by filling out our consent form

-Ill then show you the design (if I haven’t already sent it to you). We will discuss it and make any changes necessary. This is no stress at all so please don’t hesitate to let me know if there are changes you want to make.

-We will then decide size and placement by stenciling the piece. We can stencil the piece as many times as we need. It’s the easiest part of the day, so again please don’t hesitate to let me know if you want to move the stencil. I will always suggest what may look best from my professional opinion, but i like to get your feed back too and make sure ultimately YOU love where it is and how its facing.

-We will then start the tattoo. I like to try and get the lines done before the first break, and then through the colour/shading we can take as many breaks as you need. I use Bactine on every break, which is a soothing antiseptic spray. This will smooth the stinging of the tattoo in between each break. I’m also happy to use numbing cream if we have discussed doing so prior to the appointment.

-I always go at my clients pace. If your in too much pain i wont push you to finish the appointment.

-I always try an give an accurate quote on how long a piece will take, however in some rare cases a piece might take longer than expected. If this happens i do apologise, but your understanding is greatly appreciated. I want to do my best work for you and not rush the piece.

-I’m also happy to split pieces up into smaller sessions if a client prefers to only sit for a short amount of time

Post tattoo appointment

-You will either have second skin or glad wrap on the tattoo, please follow my tattoo after care instructions from this point.

-Get some really good rest, your body will be using energy to heal a wound. So try not to do anything excessive for the first week and give yourself extra time to rest.

-Check in with me after 1 month to see if it needs a touch up

Do you do consultations? Do you do touch ups?

Yes i do free consultations for any tattoo ideas. If you would like to book a consult please email me directly. my email address can be found in the 'Contact' page of this website. (macytattoos@gmail.com)

The first touch ups are always  free of charge for my work only, and should be done within the first year of having the tattoo.

If a second touch up is booked I will charge a minimum fee of $150, as all corrections on my end should be covered/touched up in the first touch up session.

Only get a touch up if you need, if your not sure please send me a photo for me to assess. I usually don’t book touch ups without seeing a photo first.

There's no time limit on the first free touch up for traveling clients (clients outside of NSW).

Where are you located? What is the accessibility?

I am located on Gadigal Land (Sydney), in Australia. Upon your appointment confirmation I will send you the studio address. The studio and location are also tagged in my Instagram bio.

I am currently working at Hibernia Tattoo in Surry Hills, Sydney. The building is a 2 min walk from Central train station and light rail. There are many bus routes from Central station. There are paid car parks a short walking distance from the studio. Or I can suggest parking near Tempe train station (free) and catching the train 2 stops. The building has an elevator for wheelchair accessibility. The studio and myself are LGBTQIA+ friendly, welcome all bodies and skin tones.

Why do you take a deposit and how much is it?

Deposits are $200 per appointment. I take a depoist to ensure that you will show up to our appointment. I also take a deposit incase the client decided to cancel their appointment, but I've already spent time creating the design for them. Its then taken as a cancellation/drawing fee. If you show up to your appointment as planned, my drawing fee is just included in the price of your tattoo. And the deposit you made will come off the total price of the session.

Once we confirm a date together, I will send you my bank details to send the deposit.

What machine do you use?

I use rotary tattoo machines. A Dan Kubin for lining and an FX Irons Xion for colour.

What Ink do you use?

I mainly use Dynamic ink, Eternal ink, and World Famous tattoo ink. These are all vegan inks. I can also supply a vegan set up if requested.

How much will my tattoo cost?

I charge a $250 hourly rate for my work. How long a piece takes will depend on the following things; design and detail, placement, size, colour scheme. The more elements and design details a piece has, the longer it will take. For example, snakes take longer due to all the scale detail, pet portraits take longer as I'm trying to replicate detail of a specific animal. Some placements can take longer. For example rib pieces double in size once the client lays down and the skin is stretched. Size is pretty straight forward, the larger the piece the longer it will take. Colour scheme can play a factor if I need to use lots of different colours. The time changing between colours and different elements adds up.

I only offer two different sessions; half day and full day. My half day sessions take MAX 4 hours. At my hourly rate this means a half day session will be MAX $1000. If it doesn't take as long the price will be adjusted. For example a 2 hour piece will cost $500. My full day sessions are a MAX 6 hours. At my hourly rate this means a full day session is MAX $1500. I don't tattoo longer than 6 hours. Anything that needs more than 6 hours to finish will require another session.

When working on large scale work like full sleeves and back pieces, I cap the full day rate at $1200.

I don't charge a drawing fee. The cost of your tattoo also covers the cost of the time it takes to design your custom tattoo. My hourly rate also covers the admin work I do in preparation for our appointment.

If you have a budget you would like to stay within please let me know. There are ways we can work with a budget so please don't hesitate to ask.

I don't charge for the first touch ups on my work if they are done within the first year of having the piece (exceptions for travelling clients).

Consultations are also free of charge.

What is your preferred aftercare method?

Above is a link to my Aftercare instructions. I use both Second Skin method and Glad Wrap method if my client has an allergy to adhesive. If the alternative glad wrap is used in the session, I will explain what to do that may be different to what is listed in my instructions.

In the link I have added photos of myself healing a tattoo on my body to give examples of what colour healing may look like.

Do you do cover ups? Do you do touch ups for other artists work?

Yes I do cover ups. I'm always happy to discuss your cover up ideas via email. I can give you more information regarding your specific piece and how to go about the cover up.

Yes i touch up other artists work. I understand that there's situations wehre a client may not be able to get a touch up from their original artist. So im always happy to help out where needed. It will not be a free touch up. Price depending on the amount of work, but the minimum charge is $150.

Do you have any guest spot trips planned?

Yes I do travel and guest spot in other tattoo studios. I usually travel within Australia. I have never worked outside of Australia for guest spot or conventions. I do hope to do this in the future by for now I'm staying close to home. The next cities I want to travel to are in order; Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane/sunshine coast. Any information regarding or updating you about guest spots will be posted to my Instagram. I can suggest turning on my account notifications so you don't miss out.

When do you open your books? When can I book?

I usually open my books at the start of every year. I will keep them open always, which means you can request to book with me at any point in the year. However, my books do usually fill up quite quick, so I would suggest sending an email when my books open even if you want to book for the end of the year. I get many emails so it can take a while for me to get back to you, especially if you've requested a date towards the end of the year. So your patience is greatly appreciated! I reply to every email I get, so even if I cant fit you in you will hear from me.

If I close my books for whatever reason during the year, you will hear about it first on my Instagram.

Once my year is full, I will close my books for that year. They will open again in January of the next year.

Will I see my design before the appointment?

I usually draw my designs about a week or a few days in advance. Sometimes I could be finishing the design the night before, or morning of, especially the colour sketch. Because of this I haven't sent the design to clients before hand. I only started this as most of my clients were always happy with the design, or give me creative freedom. I can definitely send you the design before the appointment if that makes you more comfortable. I'm also happy to make changes for you. As per my T&Cs that i will send you once we confirm an appointment, I do free changes of the design for you. I will only charge a $100 drawing fee if we completely change the design and we start from scratch. Sometimes I can be bad with time management, so if you want you design sent before the appointment just let me know in your booking emails. Ill make sure to fit you into my schedule and make extra time for you.
